Great news for fans: Dark Winds has been officially renewed for a fourth season. AMC confirmed the renewal in February 2025, just ahead of season 3's premiere.
"When we first greenlit Dark Winds, we envisioned an authentic, enduring franchise that could stand alongside our other worlds like The Walking Dead and Anne Rice," said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.
He added, "This cast and creative team have delivered exactly that, earning a passionate fan response. It all begins with Tony Hillerman's iconic novels, nurtured by producers including Robert Redford, George R. R. Martin, Chris Eyre, and showrunner John Wirth, with the incredible Zahn McClarnon and the entire cast at its heart."
Showrunner and executive producer John Wirth expressed excitement about expanding the Dark Winds universe in season 4, lauding the "superlative writers, extraordinary cast, and dedicated crew."
McClarnon shared his enthusiasm for returning as Joe Leaphorn, stating, "I'm most thrilled to be spending time with this wonderful cast and crew whom I have grown to love." He also revealed he will make his directorial debut on the show, calling it a deeply meaningful opportunity.

Season 3 of Dark Winds ended with shocking deaths, setting the stage for new twists.
In the third season, Leaphorn and Chee investigate the disappearance of two boys, while Manuelito, now with Border Patrol, uncovers a conspiracy involving human and drug trafficking at the border.
The premiere reveals that one boy, Ernesto (Alonso Rappa), has been killed, while the other, George (Bodhi Okuma Linton), survives. By the finale, it's uncovered that archaeologist Dr. Reynolds (Christopher Heyerdahl) murdered Ernesto after the boys found he was falsifying research. Chee rescues George and eliminates Reynolds.
Meanwhile, Manuelito's probe exposes oil magnate Tom Spenser (Bruce Greenwood) as the mastermind behind a trafficking ring. She kills his fixer, Budge (Raoul Max Trujillo), and arrests corrupt Border Patrol officers. Spenser escapes, leaving open the possibility of his return in season 4.
Amid the action, Leaphorn's marriage faces strain in the season 3 finale. His wife, Emma (Deanna Allison), leaves, unable to cope with his work obsession and grief over their son's death.
The official synopsis for season 4 states it "follows the officers as they confront a new, deadly hunt in the City of Angels, blending Navajo traditions with urban crime."
