The Untold Reason Carole Radziwill Was Cut From 'Love Story' - And Her Powerful Response

While the Hulu series Love Story has sparked debate over its portrayals of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette's inner circle, one notable absence has fans talking: Carole Radziwill. The Real Housewives of New York City alum was close to both Bessette and JFK Jr., having married Anthony Radziwill—JFK Jr.'s cousin and the couple's best man. Yet, despite actor Erich Bergen appearing as Anthony, Carole is nowhere to be seen in the series.

Producer Brad Simpson explained the omission to TV Insider, stating, "People's lives are full and rich. There's tons of people in them, and you have to make decisions." The creative team chose to spotlight Lauren, Bessette's sister, as a key confidant instead. "We thought it was important that, when Carolyn needed a confidant, it be her sister because they were very close," Simpson added, noting the challenge of fitting numerous real-life figures into 43-minute episodes.

Radziwill, an Emmy-winning journalist turned author and reality star, addressed the series on her Substack. Reflecting on the enduring fascination with Bessette and JFK Jr., she wrote, "Sitting here now, we know how it ended. And yet the story keeps being told. Reinvented. Embroidered. Filled with details no one could possibly know, by people who weren't there and don't care about the truth." She emphasized, "We think we own our stories. We don't. Not in life, and certainly not in death."

Her comments echo those of Daryl Hannah, JFK Jr.'s ex-girlfriend, who criticized Love Story for depicting her using cocaine and crashing Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's funeral—scenes she called "untrue." Hannah warned, "In a digital era, entertainment often becomes collective memory. Real names are not fictional tools. They belong to real lives."

Despite her exclusion, Radziwill encouraged viewers to watch the series, saying, "Watch it, and fall in love with them the way we all did back then." Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette continues to stir conversation about the line between dramatization and documented fact in Hollywood retellings.
