Christina Applegate is breaking her silence with a bombshell revelation that shatters her Hollywood image forever.

In her explosive new memoir You With the Sad Eyes, the Married…With Children icon reveals she was molested by a female babysitter at just five years old—a trauma that has haunted her entire life.

"I felt ill, terrified, and heartbroken," Applegate confesses in an exclusive PEOPLE excerpt. "Even at five, I knew it was completely wrong."

The Anchorman star reveals this childhood violation has created lifelong intimacy struggles. "Physical touch has always been uncomfortable for me," she writes. "My entire life, I've battled with closeness because of what that girl forced me into—something I barely understood but felt deep shame about."

But the horror doesn't stop there. Applegate's memoir exposes a childhood nightmare: her mother's heroin addiction and abuse from her mom's boyfriend from ages 3 to 7.

"My situation was arguably among the worst," the actress reveals. "But I know similar darkness existed in many homes—single mothers, transient men, substance abuse."

Writing this memoir has been emotionally brutal, Applegate admits. "It's brought up so much pain," she tells PEOPLE. "These were secrets I'd never shared—things hidden behind closed doors, known only to my closest confidants."

When asked if she's playing the victim, Applegate fires back: "No, I'm aiming to empower others. That's my hope."

Her message to survivors is powerful: "I wish for anyone who has experienced molestation, violence, or similar trauma to read this and think, 'Okay, I can heal and move forward.'"

In a 2019 NPR interview, the Dead to Me actress hinted at her painful past, pushing back against perceptions of her privileged life.

"My history is no less dark, and perhaps even more so, than many people's," she declared. "It offends me when people assume I've lived a charmed life, untouched by darkness."

You With the Sad Eyes—a memoir that promises to redefine Applegate's legacy—hits bookstores March 3.
