As Conan O'Brien gears up to host the Oscars for the second time this Sunday, he opened up in a pre-show press conference about how this role deeply connects him to his late father through the legacy of Johnny Carson. "Growing up, I was always trying to figure out what my dad was passionate about and how I could bond with him," O'Brien shared. "He had a love for comedy and would tune in to watch Johnny Carson. I vividly recall staying up late to see Johnny host the Oscars with him, watching my dad laugh, and thinking, 'This man is bringing joy to my father.' Now, stepping into that same position feels like a cosmic link to my dad—it's truly incredible."

Reflecting on his parents, Dr. O'Brien, an epidemiologist, and his wife Ruth, an attorney, who passed away just three days apart at their Massachusetts home, O'Brien added, "For the rest of my life, people will always want to discuss my dad. I've never encountered anyone quite like him. If I were to meet him by chance, I'd be convinced he's the most fascinating person ever."

Amid current global tensions, O'Brien also reminisced about Carson's memorable 1980 Oscars hosting during the Iran hostage crisis. "Johnny quipped, 'It is day 444 of this Oscars,' addressing something on everyone's mind. It was a unifying and profound moment for me," O'Brien noted, drawing parallels to today's challenging times.
