Saturday Night Live breakout star Ashley Padilla has revealed the jaw-dropping story of how a random party cleanup job catapulted her into a life-altering mentorship with Hollywood icon Diane Keaton.
In her early twenties, Padilla was grinding as a server in LA while chasing comedy dreams when she landed a one-night gig handing out party favors at Keaton's home. The next day, Keaton's assistant offered her an extra $200 to help clean up—a decision that would change everything.
"For a couple hundred bucks more?" Padilla recently told Vulture. "I was like, 'You're kidding. Absolutely.'"
That $200 cleanup job turned into a whirlwind of opportunities. Padilla soon found herself running errands for the Something's Gotta Give legend, delivering Christmas presents to celebrity friends and constantly volunteering for more tasks.
"I'd constantly say, 'I'm here for whatever you need,'" Padilla remembered. "Little did I know I was building a bridge to my future."

What started as temporary help evolved into a full-time assistant role—and then something far more profound. Keaton became Padilla's mentor, friend, and career catalyst, attending her improv shows with the Groundlings and even trusting her to edit and design her book Fashion First despite Padilla having zero experience.
"I managed to do it because she had faith in me," said Padilla. "Diane was genuinely invested in my success in ways I never imagined possible."
The mentorship reached its peak when Padilla landed her SNL featured player role in 2024. Keaton's reaction? Pure intuition.
"She didn't even greet me when she picked up the phone," Padilla recalled. "She just stated, 'You're relocating to New York.' She had an incredible intuition about my life before I even told her."
Padilla credits Keaton with transforming her career trajectory: "I gained so much insight from her—being around someone in the industry who's incredibly witty and has a clear vision. She emphasized the importance of self-awareness. Diane always knew exactly what she wanted, and she taught me to do the same."
In a heartfelt tribute on Instagram Stories, Padilla wrote: "I'll cherish you forever. My love for you is eternal. And I'll feel your absence constantly. Thank you for everything, Diane. You transformed my life."
