Hold onto your Hillman College gear, because Netflix just dropped a bombshell: Jada Pinkett Smith is officially back as Lena James in the highly-anticipated revival of the iconic '90s sitcom A Different World. The streaming giant teased fans with a behind-the-scenes photo of Smith in front of a trailer decked out with the show's legendary logo and her character's name, setting social media ablaze with excitement.

Smith, who brought the sharp-tongued and street-savvy Lena to life in the original series' later seasons, joins a powerhouse lineup of returning OGs. She'll reunite with Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert, Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, all set to appear in recurring roles across the 10-episode series.

This revival isn't just a trip down memory lane—it's a fresh chapter set at the fictional HBCU Hillman College. The story centers on a new generation led by Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, the rebellious daughter of Dwayne and Whitley. Watch as she tackles freshman year, battling the weight of her parents' legacy while forging her own path alongside a dynamic new cast.

Rounding out the ensemble are Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and newcomer Kennedi Reece as Hazel. Behind the camera, executive producers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, along with Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, and Tom Werner, are back to steer the ship.

Originally airing from 1987 to 1993 on NBC, A Different World started as a spin-off of The Cosby Show but became a cultural touchstone for HBCU representation after Lisa Bonet's exit. This revival builds on that legacy, which was recently celebrated with a 2024 national tour of HBCUs by the original cast and creators.
