Kennedy's cousin, who hasn't even watched the series, called the show's portrayal of Hannah "unfortunate," adding, "It's difficult to capture the intricacies of people's lives in movies or television. If you know people, these types of things often fail in capturing the essence of who people were."
But Hannah's op-ed goes far beyond artistic criticism—it exposes a terrifying reality. The Grammy-nominated actress revealed she's been bombarded with "hostile and even threatening messages" from viewers who believe the dramatized portrayal is factual. "In a digital era, entertainment often becomes collective memory," she warned. "Real names are not fictional tools. They belong to real lives."
In a fiery rebuttal, Hannah denied every allegation made in the series: "I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties. I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone's private memorial. These are not creative embellishments. They are assertions about conduct—and they are false."

The series, which chronicles JFK Jr.'s relationship with Carolyn Bessette after his breakup with Hannah in 1994, has sparked a firestorm. Hannah, now married to musician Neil Young, broke her silence to warn: "My silence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies." She accused the show's creators of being "self-serving sensationalists trading in gossip, innuendo and speculation."
Meanwhile, the show's creator, Connor Hines, defended the portrayal, saying, "We always try to come from a place of compassion." But with real-world threats escalating, the line between drama and danger has never been blurrier.
Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette airs Thursdays on FX and streams on Hulu—but the controversy is just beginning.
