In a bold move that's dividing Hollywood and Potterheads alike, legendary actor John Lithgow is doubling down on his role as Dumbledore in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter reboot—despite J.K. Rowling's explosive anti-trans controversy. The 79-year-old star isn't backing down, telling critics: "This isn't about her. It's about the story."
At the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Lithgow dropped a bombshell during a panel for queer film Jimpa, revealing he's never even met Rowling. "She's completely detached from this production," he stated, per The Hollywood Reporter. "The irony? Her own books preach inclusivity while her personal views spark outrage. I find it utterly perplexing."
Lithgow, who earned an Oscar nod for playing trans woman Roberta Muldoon in The World According to Garp, is now caught in a cultural firestorm. Fans erupted when his casting was announced, flooding social media with calls for him to quit. But the actor fired back: "Scrutinize the Harry Potter pages—you'll find zero transphobia. It's a saga about love conquering hate. That's why I'm staying put."

The drama escalated when Lithgow received a gut-wrenching text from a friend with a trans child, alerting him to a viral Book Riot op-ed: An Open Letter to John Lithgow: Please Walk Away from Harry Potter. "My first thought was, 'Why is this targeting me?'" he admitted. "But this isn't just a role—it's a statement. We're in a war over empathy, and I'm planting my flag on the side of compassion."
As Rowling faces relentless backlash for TERF-aligned rhetoric, Lithgow is reframing the narrative. "Dumbledore is a beacon of wisdom and tolerance," he declared. "The creative team behind this eight-season series is phenomenal. They're building something transformative, and I won't let noise derail it."
With the HBO series poised to redefine the Wizarding World, Lithgow's stance is a lightning rod. Will audiences boycott, or embrace his vision? One thing's clear: This Dumbledore isn't disappearing into the shadows. "The controversy made it hard, but I'm here to stay," Lithgow vowed. "Sometimes, you have to wield the wand yourself."
