Hollywood's most legendary aviation secret has finally been revealed: Kurt Russell was the mastermind behind Tom Cruise's sky-high ambitions. In an exclusive bombshell interview, the veteran actor and former pilot discloses how he personally coached Cruise into becoming the real-life Maverick we know today.
"I've flown planes for 30 years. When Tom came to me after Top Gun, he had that fire in his eyes," Russell tells TheEntBase. "We took my plane up, and I saw it immediately—this wasn't just acting. This was destiny. I told him, 'Let's make you a pilot.'"

That fateful mentorship ignited a chain reaction that would redefine Hollywood action. With Russell's guidance and later help from director Sydney Pollack, Cruise earned his pilot's license—transforming from blockbuster star to bona fide aviator.
"He's a natural," Russell beams. "Watching him in Top Gun: Maverick was surreal. That's the kid I taught to fly, now doing death-defying stunts at Mach 10."
But the story doesn't end there. Cruise has paid the mentorship forward in spectacular fashion. In 2020, Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell revealed that Cruise gifted him an iPad loaded with flight school software and funded his entire pilot training. "Tom was my hype man every step of the way," Powell shared in a viral social media post.
Meanwhile, Russell continues channeling his aviation expertise into unexpected projects. His new Michelob ULTRA Super Bowl ad—directed by Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski—features Russell coaching a novice skier with the same intensity he once brought to Cruise's flight lessons. "Working with Kosinski was electric," Russell says. "We created magic in a day."
From Russell to Cruise to Powell, Hollywood's aviation brotherhood is soaring higher than ever. And it all started with one veteran pilot recognizing the spark in a young actor's eyes.
