EXCLUSIVE: Mason Gooding reveals he was literally fighting for his life while filming a pivotal Scream 7 scene - and the shocking behind-the-scenes struggle became an unexpected performance enhancer for the franchise's dramatic reboot.
In an explosive interview with TheEntBase, Gooding discloses he contracted E. coli poisoning just 24 hours before shooting a crucial bar sequence with co-star Jasmin Savoy Brown. "I was barely there mentally," the actor confesses. "Between takes, I'd grab a bucket from under the bar and vomit. Then we'd jump back into Ghostface territory. When I look like I'm on death's door in that scene, it's because I kind of was."

Gooding's real-life health crisis eerily mirrored his character Chad Meeks-Martin's exhaustion in the film. "Some illnesses sound like they're straight out of Oregon Trail," he quips. "I made it through, dropped weight, and it oddly enhanced Chad's worn-out look. You roll with the punches when Ghostface is coming."
FRANCHISE RESET: The actor's revelation comes as Scream 7 undergoes the most dramatic transformation in the series' history. After the controversial exits of Melissa Barrera (fired over social media posts) and Jenna Ortega (who called the situation a "mess"), the franchise has executed a complete pivot back to original star Neve Campbell.

Gooding and Brown are now the only survivors from the "Core Four" introduced in 2022's Scream reboot. Original screenwriter Kevin Williamson has returned to refocus the story entirely on Campbell's Sidney Prescott, who faces a new Ghostface threat alongside her family - including daughter Tatum (Isabel May), named after Sidney's late friend.
"After her break from the series," Gooding says of Campbell's Scream 6 absence due to pay disputes, "it was key to honor her and find a genuine way to reintegrate her into the franchise she started. Once the story and May's casting were set, everything else clicked into place."
The actor admits the transition was emotional. "Building bonds with Jenna, Melissa, and the directors meant I needed time to process the changes," he explains. "But Neve is the guiding force now. This is Sidney's story again."

Gooding describes the new film as both a return to roots and a fresh start. "Chad's exhausted, I was exhausted - but we're both still standing," he says. "That's the Scream spirit. Survive against all odds, even when you're literally sick to your stomach between takes."
