Patrick Wilson, known for roles in The Conjuring and Aquaman, has joined the cast of The Last of Us season 3 in a pivotal role, while Jason Ritter from Matlock will appear as a WLF soldier, adding new depth to the post-apocalyptic drama.

Wilson will portray Jerry Anderson, as reported by TheEntBase. Jerry is the father of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and the Firefly surgeon whose death at the hands of Pedro Pascal's Joel Miller in season 1 set off a chain of revenge that drives the current storyline.

Jerry's murder motivated Abby to hunt down and kill Joel, which in turn prompted Bella Ramsey's Ellie to embark on a vengeful mission, making his character central to the show's narrative conflicts.

The news was first reported by The InSneider. Darren Dolynski originally played Jerry Anderson in the season 1 finale, but his face was obscured by a surgeon's mask. Wilson's casting suggests season 3 will mirror the video game The Last of Us Part II, which includes flashbacks to Abby's childhood with her father.

In the game, Derek Phillips notably portrayed Jerry Anderson. Season 2 of the show followed Ellie's journey with Dina (Isabela Merced) to track Abby in Seattle, ending with a cliffhanger confrontation before shifting to Abby's perspective.

This marks Wilson's return to HBO after roles in Angels in America and Girls. He recently appeared in The Conjuring: Last Rites as Ed Warren. Ritter, who previously played a Clicker in season 1, will now play WLF soldier Hanley, adding to the ensemble.

Wilson and Ritter join newcomer Jorge Lendeborg Jr. in season 3, who replaces Danny Ramirez as Manny due to scheduling conflicts. HBO's Casey Bloys has indicated that season 3 is scheduled to premiere in 2027.

Craig Mazin now serves as the sole showrunner and lead writer, taking over from co-developer Neil Druckmann. The series continues to expand its cast and plotlines, promising more intense drama in the upcoming season.
